Nine-goal winger is readymade replacement as Rangers attacker exit links ramp up: view

Scott Wright’s Rangers journey has been a tale of the unexpected.

Even when the Scottish winger signed from Aberdeen, Steven Gerrard’s 2021 swoop for the attacker caught plenty by surprise.

But since then Scott Wright has enjoyed an up-and-down spell in Glasgow which over the piece will probably be regarded as disappointing, at least as far as his own on-pitch contribution goes.

Part of the team that went unbeaten in 55, starting in the Europa League Final, scoring at Hampden v Hearts and lifting the League Cup are clear highlights despite never really doing enough to merit a consistent starting berth at Rangers.

But now – one year on from that bizarre Turkish will-he-won’t-he episode that even had him saying his goodbyes in Glasgow Airport – an exit could finally be realised.

And we’re not 100% sure how to feel about it.

Wright wanted at Hillsborough

According to the Daily Record, Sheffield Wednesday have ‘registered an interest’ in Scott Wright as they undergo a Rangers-esque rebuild this summer.

The Owls have already added four new names to their squad in the shape of Max Lowe, Svante Ingelsson, Ben Hamer and Yan Valery.

With interest in Swedish attacker Olaf Kobacki also intensifying, Scott Wright is the latest name to have cropped up on the list of German coach Danny Röhl.

The 26-year-old is in the final year of his contract at Ibrox and with Philippe Clement ‘planning wholesale changes’ it seems like the Gers will be open to a sale.

Scott Wright has made 117 appearances for Rangers since joining from Aberdeen in the January of 2021.

Rangers Scottish Premiership alternative

Should Sheffield Wednesday make their interest in Scott Wright concrete there won’t be too many Rangers fans disappointed.

Whilst the winger has shown flashes of his ability across his some three-and-a-half years at the club, there have been too many big opportunities missed by the winger.

Wright is however one of the only homegrown outfield options in the club’s squad and it would be interesting to see how Rangers react to any sale.

The club have already lost Ryan Jack from UEFA’s homegrown quota only to replace the midfielder with Connor Barron.

Liam Kelly has also re-joined the club ahead of the reportedly imminent exit of Robby McCrorie, which suggests Rangers may move elsewhere to replace Scott Wright’s role in the squad.

Kilmarnock winger Danny Armstrong is a homegrown option with the Rugby Park winger impressing last season.

Netting nine goals and laying on 14 assists last campaign, we’re sure the 26-year-old is someone who hasn’t been missed by the Rangers recruitment team.
