Report: Nottingham Forest want to sign 'outstanding' defender on a free transfer

Nottingham Forest are lining up a shock deal to sign a player with Premier League experience.

The Reds are trying to ramp up their efforts to sign new players, with the club meeting the requirements of the latest PSR cycle.

Moussa Niakhate and Orel Mangala are going to sign for Lyon and now Forest are going in search of their own new players.

Nuno Espirito Santo will need to get certain areas of the squad strengthened and now another player is being linked with the club.

It remains to be seen what the Forest squad will look like after the window has closed and now a central defender is on the radar this summer.

Nottingham Forest eye deal for John Egan

According to The Sun, Forest are lining up a move for Sheffield United captain John Egan this summer.

The central defender will be a free agent when his contract expires in the next 24 hours and he could secure a return to the Premier League.

Forest will need a couple of central defenders this summer, with Niakhate set to move on and Joe Worrall likely to leave the Reds.

Egan has won a couple of promotions with Sheffield United and in total he’s made 224 appearances for the South Yorkshire-based club.

The Republic of Ireland player is perhaps a surprising link to Forest given that he’s now 31-years-old.

Forest are going in search of younger players this summer and a deal for Egan would come out of the blue somewhat.

Egan has been called‘outstanding’ previously and it will be fascinating to see if Forest can get this one over the line.

Egan could do a job for Forest

This is perhaps a surprising link but we think it might be one that could come off.

Egan is a man who knows the Premier League inside out and he might be a cheap option that could do a job for Forest.

The international player is 31 but he’d add some experience to the ranks and bolster Espirito Santo’s rearguard.

Egan has played 73 games in the Premier League and that isn’t to be sniffed at given the lack of central defenders in the Forest squad.

Clearly this won’t be the most attractive signing that Forest make all summer but Egan could prove a useful acquisition of the club can get this one over the line.
