Report: Manchester City want 'special' midfielder to sign a new contract before 2024/25 season starts

Manchester City are said to want one of their players to sign a new contract before deciding where he goes next season.

This summer, City fans have already seen goalkeeper Stefan Ortega Moreno agree to fresh terms at the Etihad Stadium.

The stopper had strongly been linked with a move away, but he will now be sticking around and potentially he could step up as the new number one.

City are also hoping that Kevin De Bruyne might sign an extension. But it was recently suggested that may now not be the case.

Another player City are looking to get tied down is James McAtee, who has spent the last two seasons out on loan with Sheffield United.

It has been reported by The Sun that McAtee is currently the subject of interest from Girona, who of course are owned by City Football Group.

Girona will play in the Champions League in 2024/25 after enjoying a brilliant season that saw them finish third.

But before City take a decision on McAtee, they want to hand him a new contract.

Girona are said to want to sign him on loan. Or they would like to buy him and give City a buy-back clause.

City are said to be fielding offers for McAtee at the moment, which suggests there is plenty of interest in the 21-year-old, who has been dubbed ‘special’ by Pep Guardiola in the past.

McAtee currently has a contract with City that takes him up to the summer of 2026.

McAtee to Girona seems logical

So City are seeking to extend McAtee’s contract, which seems a sensible move.

At the moment, it feels as though McAtee needs another loan move and so, the club extending his deal by a year feels like a correct decision.

McAtee going to Girona would be good in theory. Under Michel, they have played some terrific football which would really suit a technician like McAtee.

Last season they were fighting at the top of the table, something that McAtee has not really been used to. Granted, he did achieve promotion with the Blades in his first loan spell, but he hasn’t played for a club in a top-flight that challenges at the top.

Girona are also in the Champions League next season and it would be a great experience for him to play in that competition.
