Report: English club have £40m bid rejected for 'superb' Tottenham target, Spurs still interested

Another Premier League side have now had a bid rejected for a player who Tottenham Hotspur are very keen to sign this summer.

Ange Postecoglou is thought to want to add a number of profiles to his squad this summer, which is currently not quite sufficient for his ambitions.

Primarily Postecoglou wants to add a new wide-forward, a defensive midfielder and a central defender.

And when you consider that both Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie don’t have any cover past Emerson Royal, there’s evidently an issue there too.

In all honesty, it is a surprise that Johan Lange hasn’t seemed to have made significant progress with any deals, ignoring Timo Werner’s loan renewal.

That being said, Tottenham are thought to be seriously interested in Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray.

The 18-year-old was ‘superb‘ in the Championship last season, playing as right-back as well as in midfield.

But despite Spurs’ interest, it was reported on Saturday that Gray was set for a medical at Brentford, who had tabled a £40m bid.

Brentford have bid rejected for Leeds’ Archie Gray, door is now open for Tottenham

Gray travelled to London on Saturday evening with an agreement imminent between Leeds and Brentford.

However, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds have now officially rejected Brentford’s offer for Gray.

The two clubs were in talks for a £40m deal, but seemingly couldn’t reach an agreement over the payment schedule.

That being said, the same report shares that both Chelsea and Tottenham remain interested in the young Englishman.

Leeds need to sell an asset in order to say on the right side of PSR, explaining why there could now be an opportunity for Daniel Levy and his team.

Although young and relatively inexperienced, Gray would still improve Tottenham’s starting eleven, able to start in midfield and substitute for Porro in defence when needed.

And given Tottenham are thought to be in a strong financial position right now, a £40m bid shouldn’t be beyond the club.

Therefore, given Sunday’s PSR deadline, this could be one to monitor throughout the day, as Leeds attempt to avoid any sanctions heading into next season.

That being said, Argentinian media have now been reacting to Giovani Lo Celso’s latest performance at Copa America.
