Sudbury’s Kingfisher Leisure Centre re-opens after evacuation following fire scare

Firefighters evacuated a Sudbury leisure facility after smoke was seen emerging from the basement – but no indications of a fire were found.

Five fire crews from Sudbury, Halstead, Nayland and Bury St Edmunds were called out to the Kingfisher Leisure Centre in Station Road shortly before 12.30pm today.

Staff and visitors were temporarily evacuated, according to a Suffolk Fire and Rescue spokesman, as crews investigated reports of smoke coming out of a basement plant room.

However, the spokesman confirmed that they did not detect any signs that a fire had occurred.

The incident was declared closed by 1pm.
