Nottinghamshire Day celebrations return to Sherwood Forest as part of the Robin Hood Festival this month.
The recognised county day, now in its fourth year, is an opportunity for the county to come together to celebrate its history, heritage, identity, culture, and traditions.
Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy a range of activities including craft making workshops, Outlaw Orienteering, poetry writing workshops — and a whole lot of festival fun at Robin Hood Festival with archery, historical re-enactments, music, comedy acts, and much more.
Nottinghamshire Day takes place on August 25, as this date marks the anniversary of the start of the English Civil War, an event triggered by Charles I raising the royal standard at Nottingham Castle in 1642.
Richard Butler, chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “Nottinghamshire Day is a date we look forward to each year as it is an opportunity to celebrate all the things that make our county a great place to live, work and visit.
“This year our annual celebrations return to the home of our county’s legend, Robin Hood, RSPB Sherwood Forest, as part of the Robin Hood Festival’s finale weekend and I am delighted that the county council is working with RSPB again to bring a special family friendly event to celebrate Nottinghamshire Day.
“What’s more, we are excited to announce that new for 2024, Nottinghamshire-themed poetry writing workshops will take place at the event. I encourage everyone — whether new to writing or more advanced, to come and have a go. More details will be shared soon.”
Working with partners RSPB, who manage the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve on behalf of the county council, the event coincides with the final weekend of the much-loved Robin Hood Festival.
Jess Dumoulin, visitor experience manager at RSPB Sherwood Forest, said: “We’re delighted to host the Nottinghamshire Day Festival at Sherwood Forest once again.
“This is such an iconic location for the county in so many ways that it is the perfect fit for this celebration day. It complements the summer-long Robin Hood Festival, championing the legend of Nottinghamshire’s outlaw hero, our heritage, and our wonderful wildlife.”
The Nottinghamshire Day event is free to attend, with parking available for £15 per vehicle, per day — in line with all events at this venue between August 24 to 26.
