What happened at Euro 2024 last night could impact Celtic making their first summer signing - opinion

As we enter a new summer month, Celtic have still to make their first signing for the new season ahead.

With Brendan Rodgers needing to add a number of players in a variety of positions, the Celtic boss will undoubtedly be hard at work identifying targets to strengthen his first team.

All we seem to talk about is the goalkeeping position these days but with Paulo Bernardo returning to Benfica, Adam Idah now back at Norwich City and with the potential of losing Matt O’Riley still hanging in the air for the Celtic fans, there is plenty of rumour and speculation surrounding potential incomings and outgoings at Celtic.

However, it seems that one potential incoming could now be sped up after what happened at Euro 2024 last night.

Martin Dubravka’s Euro 2024 exit

Martin Dubravka has been linked to Celtic for a number of weeks now. The Slovakian international was on duty at Euro 2024 and after a successful group stage campaign, he helped steer his country to the last 16 of the tournament for the first time in their history.

That teed up a meeting with England and up until the 95th minute, it looked like Dubravka was heading to the quarter-final stages.

A last-minute Jude Bellingham overhead kick took the game into extra time where an early first-half Harry Kane goal was enough to send England through and Slovakia home.

For Celtic, that could mean good news because after being told by Newcastle United that he has no future at the club, the door is open for Dubravka to sort out his immediate future.

English Premiership Financial Fair Play rules mean that Celtic could get the 35-year-old ‘keeper for as little as £1m from The Magpies and that may well be enough for Brendan Rodgers to make his move and make Dubravka his first summer signing.

With guaranteed Champions League group-stage football and the opportunity to add to his two Slovakian titles and one Slovakian Cup, a move to Glasgow would appeal to a player who is nearing the end of this career as Celtic could provide Dubravka his one last chance of footballing glory.
