Helmut Marko shares who was ‘a little more’ at fault for Max Verstappen and Lando Norris crash in Austria

Mercedes driver George Russell might be slightly fed up that nobody is speaking about the second win of his Formula 1 career.

The British driver put in a brilliant performance throughout the race and was on hand to pick up the pieces after the most dramatic event during the Austrian Grand Prix.

Going into the final quarter of the race, Red Bull driver Max Verstappen appeared to be coasting to the 62 win of his F1 career.

However, a poor pitstop from the team and a mistake from the Dutchman when he was warming up his tyres suddenly gave Lando Norris a chance in his McLaren.

The pair produced several laps of intense battling with Norris getting ahead at one point only to cede the place having gone off the track to complete the move.

That also forced the stewards to give Norris a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits too many times but the penalty didn’t matter in the end.

Norris and Verstappen eventually collided with both drivers picking up punctures and Russell sailing off into the lead, with Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz joining him on the podium.

Red Bull supremo Helmut Marko has now shared who he thinks was slightly more at fault for the crash between Verstappen and Norris while speaking to Kleine Zeitung.

His answer is unlucky to surprise many F1 fans given his allegiances in the paddock.

Helmut Marko gives his verdict on Max Verstappen vs Lando Norris collision

Asked about the battle, Marko said: “Yes, the duel was great until they, unfortunately, started concentrating more on who was violating which track limits and who was driving unfairly or not.

“It was over the top on both sides, but they are friends. Even though I don’t know whether Lando [Norris] will fly [home] with Max [Verstappen] today.

“But one thing is clear: he suddenly had a chance in a race where he no longer expected it. That’s why he was more aggressive.

“Both are to blame, both were over the limit. In my view, only Lando was a little more than Max.

“But you have to look at it positively: we both extended our World Championship leads. Max also benefited in 2016 because the two Mercedes drove into each other’s cars.”

Helmut Marko goes against the curve by pinning blame on Lando Norris

During and after the race, everyone had to have their say on who was to blame when the two leaders of the Grand Prix ended their chances of victory.

Martin Brundle believed that Verstappen was at fault and his opinion was shared by Damon Hill who both echoed the feeling of the stewards who penalised the Dutchman.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner also had his say and was much more in line with how Marko felt about the incident.

The most telling reaction came from the drivers in the cooldown room who were seeing the accident for the first time.

Russell and Sainz couldn’t help but laugh when they saw the contact between the two drivers, almost in a telling way when Verstappen didn’t give Norris adequate space.

Red Bull no longer have a dominant car and with Sergio Perez nowhere to be seen – albeit not completely his fault in Austria – Verstappen is going to have plenty more battles to fight this season.

It’s why Martin Brundle is worried about the message Red Bull sent Verstappen at the end of the race that suggests it won’t be the last time the Dutchman defends that aggressively from his rivals.
