Report: Player Jose Mourinho compared to Ashley Cole now training with Crystal Palace to try & win a contract

A player Jose Mourinho once likened to Ashley Cole is now training with Crystal Palace ahead of potentially signing for the Eagles – if he can prove his fitness.

Selhurst Park has often proven to be a place of rehabilitation for footballers who have lost their way, with the likes of Damien Delaney and Yannick Bolasie famously finding their feet in SE25.

Now, another player who needs to get back on track is training with Crystal Palace as he aims to secure a contract…

Ryan Sessegnon training with Crystal Palace

David Ornstein of The Athletic has now revealed that Ryan Sessegnon is training with Crystal Palace after being released by Tottenham.

The 24-year-old only managed eight minutes of football with Spurs last season after needing to undergo an operation on his hamstring.

Ornstein claims that talks are ongoing between Crystal Palace and Sessegnon with a view to signing the left-back on a free transfer, as Dougie Freedman aims to get a headstart on other sides who are interested.

The Athletic believe the man from Roehampton is close to regaining full fitness after his nightmarish 2023/24 campaign, as Crystal Palace attempt to sign depth behind Tyrick Mitchell.

Interestingly, Ornstein adds that Oliver Glasner has liked Sessegnon ever since seeing the Englishman play against his Eintracht Frankfurt side in Germany, while on loan from Tottenham at TSG Hoffenheim.

Risk free deal

In our view, if Sessegnon can prove his fitness in training, this should be a no-brainer of a deal.

Before a move to Tottenham put the brakes on his career, the Englishman was arguably the most exciting talent in the country at Fulham, where he remarkably scored 15 goals and provided six assists in 46 Championship appearances to fire the Cottagers to promotion in the 2017/18 campaign, mostly while playing from left-back.

As aforesaid, Mourinho even once compared Sessegnon to Cole.

The Portuguese tactician told the Independent back in November 2019: “Probably the left-back in the last decade was Ashley Cole… he was fantastic, but Ryan has lots of similarities with Ashley, and he can learn how to defend.”

Sessegnon still has plenty of time on his side to rediscover this form at the age of just 24, and with little depth behind Mitchell on the left, his arrival would make plenty of sense for Glasner.
