David Clowes gives Ebou Adams transfer answer amid Derby County and Cardiff City talks

Derby County owner David Clowes has claimed that his side are looking at several players amid questions over a switch for Ebou Adams in the summer transfer window.

Adams, 28, joined the Rams on loan in January from Cardiff City, bolstering the midfield options available to Paul Warne.

The Derby County manager shuffled his midfield around to add in the engine of the incoming loanee, which worked wonders.

The Gambian international was an instant hit with the Pride Park faithful, adding a defensive determination and grit that was otherwise missing from the squad.

In that short spell, Adams made 17 League One appearances, in which they only conceded nine goals.

His addition played a huge role in Derby confirming promotion back to the Championship, leading to plenty of questions over a permanent signing.

Ebou Adams transfer latest

With Adams making his return to Cardiff for pre-season, many are wondering whether the midfielder will make a return wearing a Rams badge or not.

Recent reports have claimed that Derby and Cardiff have held talks over a transfer for Adams, though there is no breakthrough at this stage.

As everyone awaits an update on the situation, Derby owner David Clowes was asked about the talks over a deal.

Speaking to BBC Radio Derby, he said: “At the end of the day, he’s a Cardiff City player, I mean they’re going to have a say in this, aren’t they?”

When asked what was stopping a deal, he added with a chuckle: “Well let’s see, let’s see what happens.

“I mean, there’s not only Ebou, there’s a lot of players we’re looking at so you can’t just set your heart on one player.

“Let’s have a look at who else is out there as well.”

Clowes went on to admit that he can’t say whether an asking price or something else was holding up a potential day but claimed: “He certainly made a difference, I think if he had started the season with Derby we would have won the title.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt about that but he made a massive contribution and he’s a nice guy and his family are really nice people.”

Derby County transfer decisions

One thing that has become clear from the ownership over the past two years is the importance of sticking to a vision and not overspending.

Perhaps in the past, Derby would have overspent for a player and that would snowball into other issues within their financial remit.

However, it is clear that under the current regime, Clowes is prioritising the right decision financially and tactically.

If that means the Rams are playing a waiting game for Adams, or even miss out on him, then it is key to look elsewhere.

For now, though, it appears as though the wait will carry on over an update on the future of the former loan star.
