Man charged with killing his 80-year-old grandmother at N.J. home

The grandson of the 80-year-old woman found dead in a Perth Amboy home on Sunday has been charged with her murder, prosecutors said Monday evening.

A family member called police after finding the body of the victim, Awilda Verrette, at her residence on State Street at about 1:15 p.m., officials said. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Her cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Authorities on Monday arrested Raymond Maldonado, 34, of Perth Amboy. He has been charged with first-degree murder and fourth-degree contempt for violating a restraining order, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release.

Officials did not say how he was identified as a suspect, but did say Verrette was Maldonado’s grandmother.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is asking anyone with tips in the investigation to call Detective Jose Rosario at 732-324-3800.
