Chelsea absolutely have to go and sign £65m player who just saved his country at Euro 2024 – opinion

Chelsea’s scouts and recruitment team are no doubt keeping a close eye on what is going on at the international level this summer as they look at strengthening at Stamford Bridge.

A number of current Blues have struggled to make the desired impact at Euro 2024 so far. The likes of Romelu Lukaku, Armando Broja and Mykhailo Mudryk have been dumped out of the tournament without really making the desired impact.

Cole Palmer has been forced to wait patiently to be able to make an impact, however is now surely in manager Gareth Southgate’s thinking ahead of England’s upcoming quarter-final.

When looking at potential transfer targets though, there is surely one player who has made his case for any top European side to come in and sign him this summer.

In a game where it looked a very realistic possibility that Portugal could be leaving the tournament, goalkeeper Diogo Costa stepped up to save three consecutive penalties in the first shootout of the competition.

Chelsea should sign Diogo Costa

After a huge save to keep them in the game in extra time, the Porto man stepped up when his nation needed him most to book their place in the next round.

Costa has been a name linked with Chelsea for a number of months now, as a result of there not being universal confidence in the goalkeeping options at the club.

It has been previously claimed that a fee of around £65m could be enough for a side wanting to bring him in, and while this would be expensive for a player in his position, his performance last night certainly hinted it could be a fantastic deal.

It is currently unclear who out of Robert Sanchez or Djordje Petrovic are set to be given the chance to start the season against Manchester City if another signing is not made.
