Report: Whether Archie Gray will play in midfield or right-back for Tottenham next season

Archie Gray officially completed a switch from Leeds United to Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday morning.

The 18-year-old has become Ange Postecoglou’s first permanent signing of the summer transfer window after Spurs also opted to extend Timo Werner’s loan by a further year.

Tottenham have been on the lookout for fresh options in midfield and while Archie Gray is naturally a midfielder, he featured regularly at right-back under Daniel Farke last season.

Gray racked up 52 appearances for Leeds in all competitions last term, with 30 of them coming at full-back.

The youngster has proven to be a versatile option during the early stages of his career and it’s led to many Tottenham supporters wondering where he will fit into Postecoglou’s plans. Now, The Athletic has revealed how Spurs view his best position.

Spurs view Gray as a midfielder

The outlet claims that Gray himself prefers to play in the middle of the park, despite featuring regularly at right-back last season.

It’s also noted how Spurs see him ‘primarily’ as a midfielder but with the added bonus of him being able to cover at full-back.

Gray’s best performance as a midfielder

Despite racking up most of his appearances as a full-back during his breakthrough campaign at Elland Road, it’s easy to see why Spurs view Gray as a midfielder.

The talented English prospect picked up the Man of the Match award in a 3-2 defeat at Chelsea in the FA Cup back in February.

Gray completely ran the show in the middle of the park and played a key role in Leeds’ opener, winning the ball back from Moises Caicedo on the edge of the area before Mateo Joseph finished emphatically.

It will be a significant step up for Gray with just a year of Championship football under his belt. But he’s shown so far in his short career that he’s up to the task and Postecoglou’s plans for the starlet will be an intriguing watch.
