'Here we go': 'Fantastic' midfielder Liverpool reportedly opened talks over is now joining CL rivals - Romano

Liverpool are likely to be busy on the transfer front this summer as they hope to give Arne Slot the best possible start as Reds manager.

Jurgen Klopp has laid some solid foundations at Liverpool and the Reds board must now do all they can to build on those.

Plenty of top players have been linked with a switch to Anfield in recent weeks, including reinforcements in midfield.

Thiago Alcantara has left Liverpool in wake of his contract expiry, so there’s scope for the Reds to seek and bring in a replacement.

However, one midfielder who has been linked with a switch to Anfield now looks set to be close to joining a Champions League rival.

Liverpool target Khephren Thuram closing in on Juventus move

The player in question is Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram.

In June, Tuttojuve reported that the Reds had opened talks to sign the 23-year-old this summer.

However, Juventus proceeded to steal a march on Liverpool, and now Fabrizio Romano has declared “here we go” on Thuram to Juve.

The transfer insider reported that Juve and Nice had reached agreement over a €25million (£21million) package, while the player has agreed a contract that runs until 2029.

“Documents to be exchanged today and tomorrow, final technical steps before medical tests,” he added.

Liverpool miss out on ‘dynamic’ Thuram

With Liverpool on the lookout for new midfielders, Thuram would’ve certainly been a good shout.

In 2022, Get French Football News described him as a ‘dynamic and direct deep-lying midfielder, who could also play as an outright sentinel’.

Meanwhile, Thuram’s former coach Didier Digard told Football Transfers last year: “Khephren’s fantastic.

“He’s very hardworking, very attentive. On rest days he’s at the training centre. He recovers quickly for back-to-back matches and completes high-intensity training.

“He listens and applies himself. He has room for improvement and he’s in demand. He simply eats up video analysis, additional sessions. He also advises others, because he takes on a leadership role.”

At £21million, Thuram would have been a top bargain for Liverpool, but sadly they’ll now have to look elsewhere.
