‘One to watch’: West Ham could try to sign £20m Premier League player this summer - journalist

West Ham still need a striker.

The Hammers have spent years looking for the right centre-forward, trying the likes of Sebastien Haller, Gianluca Scamacca and Danny Ings to no avail.

West Ham still haven’t been able to find that proper number nine, and they’re once again targeting that area in the transfer market this summer.

Speaking on NUFC Matters, Ben Jacobs has been discussing Callum Wilson’s future at Newcastle, and he’s claimed that West Ham could be a team to watch in regards to being a potential destination for the England international.

West Ham could move for Callum Wilson

Jacobs shared what he knows about Wilson’s future, naming West Ham as a team to watch.

“With Callum Wilson there could still be something to watch with Saudi Arabia, and West Ham United are another one to watch,” Jacobs said.

“Wolves are still looking for a striker even though Larsen has signed, then there is a domino effect with Everton and Crystal Palace who are looking for one name, whether that’s Armando Broja or Eddie Nketiah, but Wilson could be available for a little bit cheaper.”

Wilson isn’t a long-term solution

As brilliant a striker as Callum Wilson is, the £20m man is not necessarily a long-term solution to West Ham’s striking problems.

Callum Wilson knows how to score goals at this level, there’s no doubt about that, but with a number of long-term injury issues and at the age of 32, his best days may well be behind him.

Of course, there’s every chance that Wilson could join West Ham and hit 15 goals next season, but if they give him a long-term deal, it may backfire as his age profile combined with his injury history suggests he could decline in the coming years.

Wilson is a fantastic player, but it’s hard to make a case that he would be a fantastic signing for West Ham.
