Report: Tottenham made enquiry to sign ‘special’ £51m Real Madrid star but Carlo Ancelotti said no

Such is the ambition of Ange Postecoglou’s project, Tottenham Hotspur recently made an enquiry to sign a Real Madrid attacker.

Right now, it seems as if Johan Lange is making progress towards welcoming Spurs’ first ‘proper’ summer signing.

Timo Werner’s loan renewal won’t be seen as a ‘new signing’ in the eyes of most, but Archie Gray arriving to Tottenham from Leeds United certainly would.

Tottenham are now in talks to sign Gray, given Brentford’s bid was rejected at the eleventh hour owing to a disagreement in payment structure.

Although, in this incident, Brentford’s loss is definitely Spurs’ gain, who could be about to secure the signature of a future England regular.

Of course, if Tottenham were able to conclude a deal for Gray, it would only mark the start of their summer plans.

Postecoglou is also thought to have also requested a wide-forward who can also operate in central areas to strengthen his squad.

And according to a report by Footmercato, Spurs recently made enquiry for Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz.

Tottenham made approach for Brahim Diaz but were ‘categorically’ told no by Real Madrid

24-year-old Diaz, who joined Madrid from Manchester City in 2019, is predominantly an attacking midfielder who plays centrally, but can also operate out wide.

The Morocco international has a fairly similar profile to James Maddison in some respects, perhaps intended to dovetail with the England man.

And in a summer in which Madrid are welcoming Kylian Mbappe to the Spanish capital, perhaps Spurs spotted an opportunity.

Unfortunately for Tottenham, Carlo Ancelotti and his team issued a ‘categorical refusal’ to let £51m-rated Diaz leave.

Hailed as a ‘special talent’ by his manager in the past, Spurs were told there was no chance of a deal alongside Roma, who were also interested.

Of course, given Tottenham have also made an enquiry for Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, perhaps Diaz was an alternative in that case.

Although Spurs may be confident in their pursuit of Eze, the England international does also have interest from Arsenal among other Premier League sides.

Things are certainly gathering pace for Tottenham now, who will be confident of providing a squad for Postecoglou to compete for the top four and possibly even silverware next season.
