‘Audacious move’: Journalist says West Ham could go for £40m defender if they don’t get Max Kilman

Max Kilman appears to be one of West Ham’s top transfer targets heading into this summer.

The Wolves star has been strongly linked to the Hammers for a while now, and with Julen Lopetegui at the helm, the east London outfit appear to be favourites to sign the Englishman.

However, as any West Ham fan will know, no transfer deal is ever easy at the London Stadium, especially when you’re trying to purchase a player from one of your Premier League rivals.

The reality is that West Ham could still miss out on Kilman, but, worry not, if the Hammers do miss out, they have a plan B in mind.

Indeed, according to Ben Jacobs, speaking on NUFC Matters, West Ham could go for Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori if they can’t land Kilman.

Jacobs shared what he knows about West Ham and their search for a new defender

“Julen Lopetegui is now the West Ham manager, and that gives West Ham a bit of an advantage (in the Kilman race), but if they don’t get Kilman, don’t be surprised if they try an audacious move for Calafiori as well,” Jacobs said.

Calafiori deal will be difficult

Jacobs describes this move as ‘audacious’ and he isn’t wrong.

Indeed, any move for Calafiori could be difficult this summer for a club like West Ham.

Simply put, there are bigger clubs in the race to sign Calafiori.

Arsenal are said to have bid £40m for the player, while PSG have just made their own move for the Italian defender.

Unfortunately, with no European football on offer and less financial muscle to flex, West Ham may find it hard to get this deal done.

Plan A is still to sign Kilman, and, at the moment, that looks like a more doable deal than a move for Calafiori.
