'Undergoing medical': Midfield 'orchestrator' wanted by Spurs now set to join CL club on a free transfer - Romano

Tottenham Hotspur have a busy summer on the transfer front as Ange Postecoglou looks to bolster his ranks ahead of next season.

The Lilywhites have improved in Postecoglou’s maiden season at the helm, securing a spot in the Europa League.

However, there is still work to do with regards to improving the overall quality and strength in depth of the Tottenham squad.

Spurs have done well in the market in recent years, beating the likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona to Radu Dragusin and Lucas Bergvall.

However, there will also be times when Tottenham won’t be successful in landing players on their radar.

This seems to be the case with a midfield talent Spurs were monitoring. He is now reported to be heading for Lille.

Tottenham target Ethan Mbappe now Lille-bound

The player in question is Ethan Mbappe, who is now a free agent after his Paris Saint-Germain contract expired.

In June, TBR Football sources claimed that Tottenham, Chelsea and West Ham all showed an interest in adding the 17-year-old midfielder to their youth set-ups.

However, Mbappe has instead opted to stay in France and is now due to sign a long-term deal with Lille.

Romano has taken to X to report that he is now undergoing a medical at the Ligue 1 club – which will play in the Champions League next term – ahead of signing a long-term deal.

Mbappe has also been linked with Real Madrid, but talks never took place as his full focus was on staying in France, added the transfer insider.

Ethan Mbappe a completely different player to older brother Kylian

Ethan Mbappe is the younger brother of Kylian Mbappe, who will play for Real Madrid next season and is also France’s star player.

However, they are completely different players. While the older Mbappe is a rapid and prolific forward, Ethan is a central midfielder.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout has likened his style of play to that of Thiago Motta and described him as an “orchestrator”.

“He is a boy who works well, he has the right state of mind, he’s great with the ball,” PSG youth coach Zoumana Camara told Le Parisien in 2022.

“Now he’s getting a bit more aggressive, he needs to control it. But his progression is linear, it goes very, very well.

“He is well accepted in the group and I am happy that he has performed well, because football is also about seizing opportunities.”

Mbappe would’ve been a good shout for Tottenham, but if his heart was set on a switch to a French team from the start, they were always up against it.
