From Catholicism to Scientology – did Mimi Rogers play a role?

Actress Mimi Rogers and Tom Cruise met at a dinner party in 1985 during the making of Top Gun. The pair were later married in a small, intimate ceremony in 1987. Cruise at the time was a devoted follower of Roman Catholicism. Rogers, however, had been raised by Philip C. Spickler, a devout Scientologist.

“My father is Jewish and my mother’s Episcopalian, and in the early “50s – before I was even born – my father became involved with Scientology,” Rogers disclosed to the LA Times in 1991. “So, it’s not like I ever ‘converted’ to Scientology, rather, that philosophy was simply part of my upbringing.”

By the time their divorce was settled in 1990, Cruise has become an outspoken advocate for the church. He often credits a lot of his Hollywood success to the church, in an interview with ITV News Cruise says, “It’s something that has helped me incredibly in my life.” Continuing, “I’ve been a Scientologist for over 30 years. It’s something, you know, without it, I wouldn’t be where I am. So it’s a beautiful religion. I’m incredibly proud.”

Cruise is Scientology’s ‘number one victim’

The infamous church was invented by Sci-fi author L. Ron Hubbard. Hubbard developed a form of ‘therapy’ called Dianetics, going bankrupt in 1952, he rebranded this as a religion. The current ‘Chairman of the Board’ of Scientology is Hubbard’s deputy, David Miscavige, he took this title in 1987 around the time Cruise joined.

Cruise and Miscavige have formed a close friendship since meeting in the church, with David reportedly serving as Cruise’s best man when he married actress Katie Holmes in 2006

Former Scientologist high-ranker, Mitch Brisker, alleged in a 2023 Daily Mail interview, “There is not a greater control freak ever born in the existence of the human race,” when speaking about leader Miscavige.

When asked about the leader’s friendship with the Hollywood actor, Brisker said, “They really are like separated at birth. It was almost cute to see them together. I think for Tom that’s a genuine friendship and almost worship.”

“Tom Cruise is Scientology’s number one victim,” Brisker continues. “I know people will disagree with me about this, but it’s like he’s living in a distorted reality. He’s fully in the matrix.”

‘Tom Cruise on Tom Cruise Scientologist’

In a 20-year-old unearthed video, we see Cruise discuss the church 18 years after he reportedly became a member. For the nine minutes and 35 seconds, we see Cruise barely take a breath as he talks about “Tom Cruise on Tom Cruise Scientologist”.

“I think it’s a privilege to call yourself a Scientologist and it is something that you have to earn, and… because a Scientologist does.” Cruise begins, adding, “He, or she has the ability to create new and better realities and improve conditions. Uh, being a Scientologist, you look at somebody and you know absolutely that you can help them.”

The egocentric message of the church remains consistent throughout, with Cruise claiming, “We are the authorities in getting people off drugs. We are the authorities on the mind. We are the authorities on improving conditions. Criminals, we can rehabilitate criminals.”

When discussing how the church takes responsibility to “educate” and to “create the new reality,” Cruise describes the process as, “I really, it is, it’s rough and tumble. It’s wild and wooly. It’s a blast.”

In the comments section, people have highlighted the Top Gun actor’s ramblings, saying, “Tom Cruise really spoke for almost 10 minutes without actually saying anything.”

“Legends say that there was no one actually interviewing Tom for this video. He just sat there and started saying all this.” Adds another.

So, Tom Cruise, is he Scientology’s biggest success or biggest victim? Either way, we have seen the often devastating way it has impacted his life. Scientology is rumored to be the basis of his estrangement with daughter Suri Noelle of whom he recently missed the graduation.
