Ten Hag's ultimate back-up plan emerges as Man Utd 'express interest' in player he has already signed once

Manchester United have been credited with retaining an interest in the situation of Sergio Reguilon.

Left-back was a problem position for Manchester United last season with injuries suffered to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

This was an issue partially solved with a deadline day transfer move to sign Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon.

The move was short-lived. Reguilon’s loan expired in early January, with United hoping Malacia was closer to returning than he actually was, and not foreseeing Shaw’s incoming setbacks.

Sergio Reguilon still being monitored at United

Sergio Reguilon spent the second half of last season on loan at Brentford after his loan at Manchester United expired.

This loan deal has now expired and he is back as a Tottenham player, where he has one year remaining on his contract. He is expecting to move on.

Spanish newspaper AS report Manchester United and West Ham have both ‘expressed interest’ in Reguilon’s situation. There is also said to be interest from Juventus too.

Reguilon just a back-up plan, again

Manchester United do need a new left-back to provide competition and insurance against the injury situation which ripped through the United team last season.

Even so, it is very hard to believe United would re-tread the Reguilon path after mixed results last season.

The 27-year-old suffered some injury issues himself, and made only 12 appearances for the club.

Of these games played, only four came as a Premier League starter.

For Brentford he was more impressive, getting a run of games together, playing 18 times, 14 as a starter, also contributing four assists.

Reguilon has made clear his admiration for Manchester United as a club and would jump at a return if offered, but it won’t be a priority.

If United were totally convinced by Reguilon, they would have fought harder to keep him in January.

It does make sense that Reguilon remains on United’s list as an option – but it is a pretty uninspired one.

This is just the ultimate back-up plan to revisit on deadline day again if needed.

Hopefully by then a younger left-back will have been signed to freshen up the squad, with a higher upside, regardless of Reguilon’s experience.
