Former Barcelona star praises 'incredible' Tottenham defender

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has been labelled as one of the best centre-backs in the world

Tottenham’s revolution under manager Ange Postecologou has had its ups and downs so far.

Top of the league after ten games and enjoying their best-ever league start, life was looking pretty sweet for Spurs fans early last season.

That was of course until that infamous game versus Chelsea in November, in which Tottenham were beaten 4-1 and ended the game with nine men.

One of the players to be sent off that evening was Argentinian defender Cristian Romero, who saw red after a rash challenge on fellow countryman Enzo Fernandez.

A low point for Romero in his Spurs career, the defender has since bounced back and formed one of the league’s toughest center-back partnerships alongside Micky van de Ven.

Currently away on international duty at the Copa America, Romero has received high praise from Argentina under-23’s boss Javier Mascherano.

Speaking to TyC Sports, the former Barcelona man described Romero as an “incredible” player, also labelling the Spurs defender as one of the best center-backs in the world:

“Cuti Romero is among the best center-backs in the world, if he’s not the best already. We don’t know what his ceiling is” said the former Liverpool defender.

“He has demonstrated it throughout the entire season at Tottenham. He has been a cornerstone player for the team, incredibly important, and the Tottenham coach has repeatedly praised him in big matches.

“I believe he is at an incredible level, a player with impressive abilities who continues to grow and improve. The level he is reaching is impressive.”

Despite singing Romero’s praises, Javier Mascherano has left the Tottenham defender out of his Argentina Olympic squad this summer.

Romero had previously voiced his ambition to play in the Paris Olympics back in March (The Standard) but is now set to return to Spurs after the conclusion of Argentina’s Copa America campaign.

With the men’s football at the Olympics set to run up until August 10, Ange Postecolgou will likely be happy to have his defender back at Hotspur Way, as Spurs prepare themselves for a busy Premier League campaign.
