Report: Club now believe they hold an advantage over Crystal Palace in race to sign £8m player

Crystal Palace could be about to miss out on one target as another club believes they have the edge in £8m race.

Midfield has emerged as a priority position for Crystal Palace this summer and recent days have seen multiple midfielders linked with a move to Selhurst Park.

This is an interesting position to be targeted considering it is a strong department with Adam Wharton, Cheick Doucoure and Jefferson Lerma all being excellent in the position.

Now, Palace are facing some serious interest in one of the top targets for the midfield this summer.

Fiorentina believe they have the edge in Aster Vranckx race

The race to sign Aster Vranckx is heating up nicely and Crystal Palace are thought to be leading the race which includes at minimum three other clubs, including two Premier League rivals.

The first links to the Belgian only emerged earlier this week but Palace are pushing for the deal already and he’d be a strong addition in midfield for a fee reported to be just £8m.

Now, according to the Italian outlet Firenze Viola, despite the Eagles potentially offering more than Fiorentina, the Italian side believes they have the advantage over Palace.

This advantage is that Fiorentina have what the outlet referred to as bigger objectives. This means European football, as Fiorentina qualified for the Europa Conference League last season.

That being said, Palace are expected to offer Vranckx a greater financial package. Along with this, the ambitions around Selhurst Park are rising and with Glasner, Vranckx could see Palace as the more attractive option.

Who should be the two starting midfielders for Palace next season

If Vranckx is to arrive this summer he’d be joining a strong midfield group but would he be starting?

Vranckx is a strong defensive midfielder with plenty of quality off the ball, however, on the ball he is less comfortable.

Assuming Wharton starts, then Vranckx, Lerma and Doucoure would all be competing for that second spot.

Lerma has already earned the trust of Glasner through his performances last season. Meanwhile, Doucoure’s return, we hope, will see him return to the level he’s been at in the past, which makes him an instant starter.

So it’s hard to see a way Vranckx would be anything more than a rotational player for Glasner next season.
