The Advertiser found out what people think of the new Labour government following General Election results

As the country awakens to a new political era, the Advertiser found out what people think about the new Labour government and future expectations.

After 14 years of a Conservative government, the Labour Party Keir Starmer has handed a defeat over Rishi Sunak, the ruling Prime Minister since 2019.

Following the results of the General Elections, which took place yesterday (July 4), Labour secured 412 seats, whilst Conservatives won just 121 seats.

Opinions regarding the new government varied across Newark, a town whose Conservative MP Robert Jenrick, maintained his historical seat again since 2014.

Rose Lewis said: “I think it was time for a change but I don’t think they will last very long to be honest.

“I think they will last about four years.

“I am pleased that Jenrick kept his seat because we like him.”

Michale Langley said: “I don’t want to be cynical but to me, it doesn’t matter who wins because most of them seem to say what they want to do and when they get in power they won’t do it.

“I don’t know whether it is a good thing or a bad thing, we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Linda Yarnell said: “We had enough of the torys.

“About Robert Jenrick I am indifferent, I am not that bothered. We just don’t seem to be getting anywhere that fast, we are becoming a ghost town. No one seems to be bothered, too many empty shops.”

Maggie Kafton said: “I am not very happy that Labour won. I think they will ruin the economy.

“I am glad to hear that Jenrick kept his seat for Newark.”

Adrian Fital said: “I am from Poland, I have lived here for 20 years so I think the country needs a change.

“It is time for change.”

Lindsey Ecaster said: “I am not bothered. I liked Farage.

Simon Ecaster added: “I am slightly concerned that Labour got a massive majority but I am not entirely sure that they will stick to their policies that they have said they are going to deliver on.
“I don’t think it will be too long before the left-wing views come to the far.”

Dawn Chatters said: “I don’t know what to think yet, I say we just wait and see.”

Mr Candy said: “Nobody knows what they are going to do, they didn’t put a portfolio forward, there’s going to be a tax rise, they are going to tax pensioners, it is going to be chaotic.

“I think the pound will be going down.”

Philip Bird said: “I don’t care, they are the same regardless of party.

“I don’t think Labour will make any change at all, they will get us worse and then we will go back to the other one again.”
