Keyshia Cole’s mother, Frankie Lons, died on Sunday from an overdose while celebrating her 61st birthday.

Frankie’s family members said she was celebrating her birthday at her home in Oakland, California, where she apparently relapse after years of struggling with addiction.

Cole’s sister Elite Noel was the first to announce their mother’s death through an Instagram story.

“Worse pain ever … to see my mama in a body bag on her birthday! My heart so f— broke,” she wrote.

Reports note that Cole was adopted when she was young and was raised by family friends. She had a complicated relationship with her biological parents until she started working in the music industry.

There were several reality television shows that showed what her life was like, including Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is (2006) and Keyshia Cole: My New Life (2019) on BET.

Cole had previously opened up about her mother’s battle with addiction. In 2018, she shared an Instagram post, telling her followers, “Every time my mom relapse, it breaks my heart more than it’s already been broken. I’m hoping, if any of [you] are dealing with a family member who’s battling with drug addiction, that you, yourself are learning how to cope with the struggle of it all. And all the pain it brings to see a loved one constantly relapsing.”
