Report: Yankees, Rangers Swing Blockbuster Trade

The New York Yankees have been looking for a left-handed impact bat. After making a flurry of moves to clear salary and roster space, it appears they have now found that player.

According to Levi Weaver of The Athletic, the Yankees have swung a deal with the Texas Rangers for All-Star outfielder Joey Gallo. Left-handed reliever Joely Rodriguez is also heading to New York as part of the deal.

The Yankees have battled COVID-19 issues and injuries all across the board. Their losses over the course of the season have included Aaron Judge, Gio Urshela, and Luke Voit, among others. The addition of Gallo gives their heavy-righty lineup some balance and some insurance for the rest of the season.

The Rangers were fielding interest from multiple other clubs including the Blue Jays, Red Sox, and Padres before agreeing to the deal with the Yankees.

Gallo, 27, won’t be a free agent until 2023. He is a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove award winner. This season, he is slashing .223/.379/.490 with a .869 OPS. He has also hit 25 home runs with 55 RBI and six stolen bases.

Rodriguez, 29, is under contract through next year along with Gallo. The southpaw has a near-six ERA on the season, but his underlying stats are very promising. He has a 3.76 xERA, 3.70 FIP, 3.25 xFIP, and 3.40 SIERA.

The Yankees are sending infielders Ezequiel Duran, Josh Smith, and Trevor Hauver, and pitcher right-handed pitcher Glenn Otto back to the Rangers. All of them are featured in MLB Pipeline’s ranking of the Yankees’ top 30 prospects.
