Last Sunday, Lionel Messi bid farewell to Barcelona after spending 21 years with the club. The 34-year-old forward is taking his talents to France to join Paris Saint-Germain. Messi’s contract is two years (£25 million per year) and it includes a third-year option and a £25 million signing bonus.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner was originally set to sign a new five-year deal with Barcelona. However, the deal could not be finalized due to “financial and structural obstacles”. Messi leaves Barcelona as the club’s all-time leading scorer with 672 goals. In addition, he won 35 titles with the club, including 10 La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League titles. Messi’s list of accomplishments is endless and now he’s ready for the next chapter of his illustrious career.

Paris Saint-Germain had quite a summer. Signing the likes of Sergio Ramos, Achraf Hakimi, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Gianluigi Donnarumma has huge potential of being money well spent. Now that Messi joins the list of investments, the club’s potential for success largely increases. Furthermore, the club’s future is only brighter now.
At this point, there are no excuses for Les Parisiens. No excuses for not winning the upcoming Champions League. Les Parisiens have a very loaded team. Although, when it comes to PSG, talent isn’t the problem. It’s rather the mentality. However, with both Messi and Ramos on the team, the mentality and leadership can largely improve, considering both Messi and Ramos captained Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively. In Messi’s case, a strong performance this season could result in a seventh Ballon d’Or. Winning the Champions League may solidify Messi’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or once again.
Messi will wear No. 30 on his jersey while playing for Paris Saint-Germain. In his early days at Barcelona, Messi wore No. 30. Messi may see his first action on Saturday as Paris Saint-Germain takes on Strasbourg.
