SG have made a historical achievement in the SA scene, making it to the biggest stage in Dota 2.
SG esports might not have created the headlines in Dota 2, but they sure have what it takes to outweigh others in the South American region and challenge the best teams out there. Founded in 2016, SG are the first Brazilian team who took part in a Valve organized competition through Kiev Major. But a lot has changed since then.
The Recent Past Of SG esports
On July 23, 2019, SG players parted ways, and the organisation had to cease its operation in November. SG returned to the scene in December 2020. When the world was reviving from a massive pandemic, the South American organization bought Team Brasil, which was also competing in the SA region.
SG also went through a few changes, including the joining of Otávio “Tavo” Gabriel in place of Danylo “Kingrd ‘’ Nascimento for the offlane role. It was time to turn things around as the team didn’t perform well enough in Dota Pro Circuit to challenge the likes of NoPing e-sports and beastcoast. Their 25th spot in the DPC standings was a result of their poor finishes in both the seasons.
SG esports had to bet everything on the regional qualifiers, as their entry in The International was on it. The Brazilian squad had to face a fierce battle against Infinity who had beaten NoPing e-sports in the first round of the competition. However, SG swept them 2-0 to enter the finals against Team Unknown. SG showed confidence In the finals and beat Unknown 3-1, attaining a deserved spot in TI 10.
We saw SG in action again in the ESL One Fall 2021 tournament. Organized as a warmup for The International, the competition was not a positive one for the Brazilian side. Stranded in Group B with teams like beastcoast, Alliance and PSG.LGD, SG were last in the standings. The team just couldn’t make it to the playoffs of the competition.
Odds Of Winning The International 10
Although SG esports has shown immense promise in their performances at the qualifiers, TI 10 will be an enormous wall to climb for their squad. Dota 2’s biggest event will showcase teams like Evil Geniuses, PSG.LGD, Invictus Gaming, Team Secret, Team Aster and many more incredibly strong squads. However, if there is one thing we know from watching TI for all these years is that we should never underestimate an underdog side. Whether it’s Wings Gaming at International of 2016 or OG’s victory in 2018.
The International never stops surprising people. Who knows, SG might challenge the big guns and even if they don’t win the event, it will be an impressive achievement to defeat some of the best teams in the world.
The International is not just about winning, teams get exposure and opportunities. It is a big learning chapter for newer organizations.
