The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has finally gotten to test out the Ford Bronco, and it has performed well in five of the six tests, earning an overall “Good” rating. However, that means it has fallen short of receiving a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. To compare, the JL Jeep Wrangler also scored a “Good” rating from the IIHS.
Ford Bronco IIHS Crash Test Safety Score
The Ford Bronco managed to ace five of the crash tests. However, the head restraint test ended up being its downfall. The IIHS noted that the neck of its test dummy “was subject to moderate force in a simulated rear-end test.” However, it did pass the most challenging test, which is the crucial driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal crash test. Overall, the Ford Bronco is concluded as a safe vehicle to drive, even without a Top Safety Pick award.
The headlights also came short for the Ford Bronco, which is another feature the IIHS considers for either a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award. The lesser ranked award requires vehicles to have either Good or Acceptable headlights. The Bronco only achieved a Marginal rating due to the low beams, which do not illuminate a significant enough distance on curves. However, on the opposite front, the Bronco earned Superior and Advanced ratings for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian crash avoidance technology.
For something that can remove the doors, the roof, and comes in two body styles, a “Good” safety rating from the IIHS for the Ford Bronco isn’t bad. Not bad at all.
