League of Legends comedy show ‘Players’ announced by Paramount

A League of Legends esports-themed sitcom titled “Players” has been announced for release this year on Paramount+.

The show will follow a fictional esports team, Fugitive Esports, as they pursue the trophy in a major league. The show will be written by a team including those with esports experience, and even stars some past players.

Paramount announces League of Legends comedy show

The show was announced on February 1, and has supposedly been in development for several years. The show is meant to be a mockumentary-style series that follows the trials and tribulations of a fictional LCS team trying to win it all. Several League of Legends esports-based shows have been announced, with another based on the journey of ex-Echo Fox owner Rick Fox’s journey to esports involvement.

The show was announced on Twitter with a picture of the fictional roster of Fugitive’s esports team. Fans immediately noticed two things. There are some familiar faces and the mid laner’s keyboard is something to behold.

Fans quickly picked out Noh “Arrow” Dong-hyeon and Jung “Youngbin” Young-bin as the team’s top laner and support respectively, assuming the lineup is in the usual order of an esports photoshoot. With writers like the LCS’ Kien Lam and former professional players, the series has promise to be able to make light of some of the LoL esports scene’s wackier aspects.

There are certainly stories from League of Legends’ professional scene that walk the line of being stranger than fiction, and insider knowledge of the ecosystem means the writers are likely to bring out some familiar storylines. One part of the announcement that’s been catching fans’ eyes is the mid laner’s keyboard. An absolute monstrosity from the early 2000s, it’s been the subject of many jokes from fans.

Players will debut later this year on Paramount’s streaming service.
