There’s a lot to get excited about regarding the new Ford Ranger. For starters, the North American market is finally getting the Ford Ranger Raptor. That will come in two different powertrains depending on where in the world you are. But Ford had kept themselves tight-lipped when it came to the powertrains for the diesel engines that will be offered, until now. It seems the most potent diesel engine provided will have a total of 247 horsepower (184 kilowatts) and 442 lb-ft (600 Newton-meters) of torque. Some V8 gas engines don’t even have that much twisting force.
Ford Ranger: Diesel Powertrain Details
The punchy new Ford turbodiesel comes with a start/stop system, which is also available for the Ranger Raptor’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 gasoline engine that’s shared with the Bronco Raptor. Ford will sell the six-cylinder pickup with diesel in XLT, Sport, and Wildtrak trim levels in Australia. While fuel economy numbers have yet to be published, the truck meets Euro 5 regulations.

The new Ranger can be fitted with a more miniature 2.0-liter diesel that features a single-turbo depending on the region. The engine produces 168 horsepower (125 kW) and 300 lb-ft (405 Nm) of torque. Adding an extra turbo to the engine boosts the power output to 207 hp (157 kW) and 370 lb-ft (500Nm). Depending on the engine you choose, the next-gen Ranger has a maximum payload capacity of 2,925 pounds (1,327 kilograms). Maximum towing capacity could be as high as 7,716 lbs (3,500 kg) which could easily haul some bulky items if needed.
The on-demand 4WD system comes with 2H, 4H and 4L modes as well as 4A automatic. In addition, Ford will offer as many as seven driving modes, including part or full-time four-wheel drive, and eventually, there will be a plug-in hybrid setup. All of the engines are mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission, while some fleet vehicles with four-cylinder engines will also get a start/stop system.
