Belgium's Chances at the World Cup in Qatar

The Belgian National Team is more determined than ever to bring home a national title. Since 2014, Belgium has been chasing both the World Cup and the European Championship. Unfortunately, their attempts have ended in failure. Although Belgium won a bronze medal four years ago in Russia, there’s nothing more important to them than gold.

This is it for the current golden generation. It is Belgium’s final chance to win the world title. They have done fairly well with the likes of Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, Thibaut Courtois, and Jan Vertonghen. However, with these players all in their 30s, (aside from Lukaku who is 29), they desperately need to win the gold. Belgium winning its first national title will pave the way for the next golden generation.

What are Belgium’s Chances in Qatar?

Belgium is the overwhelming favorite in their group. Squaring off against the likes of Canada, Morocco, and Croatia should not trouble them. Canada is a talented team that can challenge the Belgians, however. Croatia is certainly not the same team they were four years ago, but Belgium cannot underestimate them. As far as Morocco goes, Belgium shouldn’t have any problems beating them, but the team should still take them seriously.

The first goal for the Belgians is to win the group. Winning all three games in the group stage will provide them with a huge boost of confidence and motivation. Four years ago, team chemistry and teamwork played a huge role in their come-from-behind win against Japan in the Round of 16 and an upset 2-1 win over Brazil in the quarterfinals. They are definitely going to need those two aspects this time around.

After losing 1-0 to France in the semifinals, resiliency is what allowed the Belgians to bounce back in their match against England for the bronze medal. Being that this is their last chance to win the title, the team cannot afford to mess up.
