Stimulus Checks From Iowa: Hundreds of Workers to Get $700

The Federal government may be done sending stimulus checks, but states and cities are continuing to send targeted payments to residents. West Liberty, Iowa, is the latest city planning to send stimulus checks to its residents. The stimulus checks from Iowa will be $700. The money will go to workers that were excluded from the federal stimulus check program.

Stimulus Checks From Iowa: Who Will Get Them?

Last week, council members in West Liberty voted to move ahead with the plan to give stimulus money to about 200 residents. Although the council members have approved the plan, it still needs to be formally announced. A formal resolution on the proposal is expected to come by June 21.

These stimulus checks from Iowa will go to the workers that weren’t eligible for the federal stimulus checks. This means immigrant workers will get stimulus checks once the formal proposal is approved. As of now, it isn’t clear when the workers will get the stimulus checks.

Some council members feel that $700 isn’t enough, and that workers in the city should get about $1,400. These council members plan to continue campaigning for a higher stimulus check amount. The city will use about $147,000 in ARPA funding (American Rescue Plan Act) to send the stimulus checks from Iowa.

Once the proposal is formally approved, the stimulus check could prove extremely helpful for workers, especially with inflation reaching a record high. As per the data from the U.S. Department of Labor, the inflation rate in May reached 8.6%, the highest since December 1981.

Residents In These Two States To Get Money This Month

Meanwhile, residents of two states, Maine and New Mexico, will be getting stimulus checks this month.

In Maine, eligible residents, who have filed their 2021 state income tax returns, will get stimulus checks of $850. To be considered for the payment, residents must have filed their return by October 31. Also, residents must not be claimed as a dependent by someone else on their tax return.

Moreover, the federal adjusted gross income should be less than $100,000 for single filers ($150,000 for head of household and $200,000 for couples filing jointly). About 858,000 residents are estimated to receive the stimulus checks from Maine. The state will continue to send the payment until the end of the year.

New Mexico will also be sending out tax rebates this month. Eligible single filers will get a payment of $250, while joint filers will get $500. A point to note is that eligible residents need not submit an application to get the tax rebate. Rather, all residents who filed their tax return by May 31 will get the rebate automatically.
