With the arrival of the S650 Ford Mustang, the previous S550 generation will see its final year in 2023, which appears to be relatively uneventful. To start, dealers recently received a note from Ford stating that the order bank for the 2023 Mustang is closing today, December 5th, 2022, for retail orders. However, dealerships will be able to place stock orders after the date of the 5th but will be subject to available commodities. Ford has also made minimal changes to the S550 Mustang for its final year.
2023 Ford Mustang Production: Details
Ford doesn’t appear to have plans to offer a 2023 to 2024 model year transition offer to customers who don’t get the 2023 model year Mustang built. This makes sense, considering that the S650 Mustang is a significant step up in terms of what it offers. If you want a 2023 Mustang, you will have to choose from the EcoBoost, GT, or Mach 1, as the GT500 will not be manufactured for 2023.
As far as changes we have seen on the 2023 Mustang Order Guide, Brittany Blue and Cyber Orange will not be available for the model year; otherwise, everything else remains the same. Additionally, Ford will be shortening the 2023 model year production run as the S650 will launch next year. These decisions are wise from a business standpoint, as most will be waiting for the next generation Mustang. By limiting the production timeframe, they can save money and get the new Mustang into production sooner.
The 2024 Mustang offers two engine types, the base 2.3L EcoBoost engine and the 4th generation of the 5.0L Coyote V8. The 302-cubic-inch V8 now features twin throttle bodies and a completely reworked intake system, while the variant in the high-performance Dark Horse features internals from the 760 horsepower Shelby GT500. Unfortunately, official horsepower and torque numbers still elude the S650 Ford Mustang. Still, the expectation is that we will see more than 332 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque with the EcoBoost and up to 500 horsepower from the Coyote V8 in the Dark Horse. Meanwhile, the GT will fall in line somewhere between those two.
