MIDSIZE TRUCK SALES 2022: GM UP, FORD & JEEP DOWN

After looking at the sales data for 2022 Full-size trucks, we can get a decent idea of what to expect from the midsize truck market. Unfortunately, minimal improvements in the supply chain, paired with other extreme expenses for American consumers, means there’s also bound to be a loss in this segment. Overall, however, the midsize pickup truck sales in 2022 were a mix. Below, we’ll go into the numbers, as well as factors that contributed to the results.

Mid-Size Truck Sales Numbers: Overall Segment Down 4.4%

For General Motors, midsize trucks have gained substantial ground with the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon over the past year compared to 2021. This could be a sign that GM has made great progress in solving supply chain problems that may have contributed to inventory shortages in 2020 and 2021.

As for the Ford Ranger, we saw a year over year sales drop in 2022, dropping from third place in overall midsize truck sales to fifth. While Ford has been hit hard with chip shortages, customers could also be holding out for the the new Ranger on the horizon, or the truck could be getting cannibalized by the very in-demand Maverick small truck.

As for the best-selling midsize truck, the Toyota Tacoma still reigns supreme, though it did see a drop in sales by 6%, which falls more or less in line with the brand as a whole for the last year. A redesigned Tacoma is on the horizon for 2024, which could be what people are holding out for, as the current model has been on sale since 2015.

Overall, the total midsize truck sales in the U.S. for 2022 is at 608,144 units, just a 4.4% decrease over the 2021 model year.

Now, let’s take a look at precise numbers. The Toyota Tacoma sold 237,323 units in 2022, less than in 2021, where they sold 252,520 trucks. However, GM came in second for midsize truck sales when combining the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon’s total for the year. The Chevrolet Colorado sold 89,197 units, up 22.2% over last year, where just 73,008 trucks were sold. Meanwhile, the GMC Canyon sold 27,819 units, up from 24,125 in 2021.

The Jeep Gladiator finished the year with 77,855 units sold; compared to the previous year, 89,712 trucks were sold, making a 13.2% decrease in overall sales. The Ford Ranger comes in fifth place behind the Nissan Frontier with 57,005; by comparison, Ford sold 94,755 Rangers in 2021, meaning there was a 39.8% drop in sales over the past year. Hopefully, the arrival of the next-generation Ford Ranger later this year will boost that number up a bit but by how much remains to be seen.
