The GM Design Instagram page is handedly the coolest social media channel from General Motors. There, you’ll come across some pretty exciting sketches from the design team that lets the imagination run wild. Because it’s not always early design sketches of a recently revealed product. Other times it’s something that could have been, or a peek at something that’s about to be, such as a C9 Corvette, or a 7th generation Camaro.
For example, the latest sketch posted on GM Design’s Instagram was drawn up by Casey Swanseger – a designer that’s involved in the Corvette program.
As with many design sketches, not all aspects translate to a production-ready vehicle, such as the massive wheels, which can be found on this sketch, but that doesn’t mean it’s without some draw. The smooth curves of the car and low profile indicate that it’s, in fact, a sports car of some sort or even a supercar. We can make out the narrow taillights which once again don’t do much to indicate what type of vehicle it might be, but the exhaust tips are certainly a prominent feature. There’s even a hood scoop that can be made out at the front, which could point to something more akin to a Camaro over a mid-engined C9 Corvette. Or perhaps it was an early design sketch for a front-engined Corvette. Ultimately, we’re left to our imaginations.
The Chevrolet Camaro in its current form will retire in 2024 with no immediate replacement. Going away from its muscle car ethos and into more of a sports car space, the sixth-gen Camaro hasn’t achieved very significant numbers that Chevrolet may have hoped for in terms of sales over the past few years, but with General Motors pursuing a zero-emission future, it’s fair to speculate that we could see the seventh-generation Chevrolet Camaro debut with an electric powertrain, possibly to go up against the electric Dodge Charger and/or electric Dodge Challenger. But again, not right away.
Meanwhile, the C9 Corvette is more or less a certainty with an expected arrival in 2028 or 2029 as either a 2029 or 2030 model-year vehicle. Given the massive success of the C8 Corvette, the C9 will follow the C8 with a mid/rear-engine layout, two seats, and two doors. It will be a second mid-engined Corvette Generation. Also, like the C8, the C9 Corvette is expected to feature an internal combustion engine, according to forecasts. Some may be surprised by that, given the period in which the car will be released. The concept art features similar lines to other C9 sketches we’ve seen, though with the prominent hood-scoop, it’s hard to discern which car, if any, it’s intended to be.
