Tesla is going to produce the Cybertruck, no matter what. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated many times that he doesn’t care if it flops, it’s an important and exciting project for the company. The now, Austin Texas based automaker has brought some unique vehicles to the roadways some of which can get up and go (Tesla Model S Plaid). The company is eager to bring a totally different pickup truck to the market after being saturated with what feels like the same design scheme for decades. The latest news about the company’s upcoming all-electric truck includes a recent patent filed for the unique windshield of the Cybertruck, presumably to be applied on units being produced at the end of this year.
It almost brings the Tesla Cybertruck story full circle. On its very first public appearance one of the big selling points were the rugged and supposedly indestructible windows that ended up giving way during the live demo of what the company calls “Tesla Armor Glass.” The new patent looks to right this embarrassing and now infamous moment on stage. The new glass, which still goes by the same name, is described by the company as “ultra strong” and “polymer layered” meaning it is better equipped to absorb and deflect debris while also holding up longer than one demo presentation.

To get technical, the previous manufactured glass only allowed for a radius of curvature only of 1-3 meters. Its biggest limiting factor was the actual manufacturing process itself. With Tesla’s new way of creating automotive glass the radius of curvature expands to 2-5 meters. The new process takes advantage of localized heating and gravity to naturally expand the glass and shape it. The use of presses, vacuum air suction and other instruments can also be utilized to assist in the shaping process. The company also notes that they can provide multiple layers using this new process, adding to its overall strength and durability.
