During the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, this weekend, Ford decided to offer up the first customer example of the S650 Ford Mustang slated to begin production later this year as a 2024 model year vehicle. All sale proceeds were set to be donated to JDRF, a charity supporting the fight against diabetes. This past weekend, rights to have the muscle car was sold, the final bid came in at $565,000.
2024 Ford Mustang Auction: Details
The first of the new seventh-generation Mustangs, with a VIN ending in 001, is confirmed to be a Mustang GT. It has yet to be built, so the winning bidder can still configure the car to their liking, which is ideal when spending over half a million dollars on it.

This isn’t the first VIN 001 vehicle Ford has sold at the auction to support a charity of their choosing, with the most recent Shelby GT500, Mach 1, and Bullitt also appearing at auctions over the years. Those bids often entered the seven-figure territory during the sales, with the first example of the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 selling for $1.1 million in 2019. So, we can see that the latest bid was a bit more conservative, but since all proceeds are going to help the fight against diabetes, it’s still a win, nevertheless.
We expect to start seeing the 2024 Ford Mustang appear in showrooms this summer in EcoBoost, GT, and Dark Horse forms. Each with its respective draws, all coming in as more potent than the previous generation. The EcoBoost comes with a 315 horsepower 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, while the GT offers a 5.0-liter V8 with 480 ponies in the standard guise. But, if equipped with the Performance Package, which adds an available active exhaust option, that power is boosted up to 486 HP. Finally, the all-new Ford Mustang Dark Horse trim, which shares the Mustang GT’s 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine, pushes out 500 horsepower. Buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic, which will undoubtedly make many car enthusiasts happy in the day and age where manuals are disappearing.
