With the reveal and future production already set in stone for the all new 2024 RAM 1500 REV, attention remains locked on the Stellantis truck brand to offer something more utilitarian that will meet customers at a frugal price point. Not much is known about the midsize truck right now however if the concept reveal goes well with the dealers, we could see the real thing in a short while. According to reports, Ram is still planning on showing its dealers a new mid-size electric pickup truck this March. Roughly 4,000 dealers in America sell Ram trucks.
Says Motor Trend, the truck could be electrified. That doesn’t necessarily mean it will be fully electric, as the heavily covered truck that as caught testing in the Swedish Arctic Circle showed signs of an internal combustion engine (an exhaust pipe). Expectations are that it will be based on the STLA Large platform, which is an architecture that supports both electric and engine-powered vehicles. Currently, the only mid-size truck that Stellantis sells in the USA and Canada is the Ohio-built Jeep Gladiator, which doesn’t exactly appeal to the lion’s share of the segment as it has a live front axle, and appeals more to upmarket lifestyles that seek off-road capability over utilitarian practicality.
According to Cox Automotive the midsize truck segment saw the fifth largest growth percentage last summer. If Ram wants to capitalize on the segment, they will have to ante up. Ford and GM are currently reaping the benefits of offering their own iterations of a midsize truck with the Ford Ranger, Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon albeit they are not all-electric. Nissan has even thrown out concept images of an all-electric midsize pickup truck for the North American market to see if there is any interest. Ram could yet again be late to the party, but that isn’t always a bad thing.
