As the final addition to NOAA's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) series, GOES-U will enhance weather observation and environmental monitoring. It will track local weather events impacting public safety, including thunderstorms, hurricanes, wildfires, and solar storms. This powerful satellite aims to improve forecasting and emergency response for severe weather conditions.

A SpaceX Falcon, Heavy rocket, has launched a hurricane-hunting GOES -U weather satellite into orbit, completing a fleet of four at the heart of a €10 billion upgrade to the nation's forecasting infrastructure. The satellite's launch was delayed after forecasters predicted a 70% chance of late afternoon storms. It took off from the Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral at 5:26 pm EDT (11.26 pm ET), roughly 10 minutes late. The GOES-U satellite was propelled by more than five million pounds of thrust from the 27 engines at the base of three strapped-together first-stage boosters. After helping...

Cloud modifying techniques used to cool the climate in California could eventually push heatwaves towards Europe, according to a new study. If global warming reaches 2C above pre-industrial by 2050, cloud modification could majorly warm almost all of Europe except the Iberian Peninsula. The research showed the biggest increases in Scandinavia, Central Europe and Eastern Europe. The study’s authors say their findings are concerning because there are next to no regulations in place for this kind of local climate modification and the consequences could be hard to predict. “Our study provides the ...

Washington (AFP) - Deadly heat that blanketed the United States, Mexico and Central America recently was made 35 times more likely due to global warming, an international network of climate scientists said on Thursday. The World Weather Attribution (WWA) group of scientists also said that extreme highs witnessed over that region in May and June were four times as likely to occur today as a quarter of a century ago. The record-breaking heat killed at least 125 people in Mexico and caused thousands more to suffer heat strokes, a potentially fatal condition that occurs when the body's internal ...

Sitting on the tiny Thai island of Koh Mak as lightning flashed on the horizon, my eyes were glued to the AccuWeather app. I was mesmerised by the storm tracking feature, which followed the weather front as it erratically skirted my cliffside bungalow. On an island so obscure that it was absent from the world map up until the late 1960s - when German tourists became some of the first European visitors to what they dubbed the ‘Lost World’ - I wondered how a US weather service could so accurately predict the conditions here. So I decided to find out. What does it take to deliver some of the worl...

Euro 2024 fan zones and public viewing areas in several German host cities, including Tuesday's match venue of Dortmund, were closed after forecasts for heavy thunderstorms, local authorities said. The decisions also affect the capital Berlin and the western German cities of Dusseldorf, Cologne and Gelsenkirchen. The fan zone in Leipzig, where the match between Portugal and the Czech Republic is due to take place, reopened after being briefly closed. In Dortmund, thousands of Turkish fans had been expected to follow their national team's opener against Georgia in the fan zone at the Friedenspl...
