A portrait of a young woman by Gustav Klimt that was long believed to be lost was sold at an auction in Vienna for €30 million. The Austrian modernist artist started work on the “ Portrait of Fräulein Lieser” in 1917, the year before he died, and it is one of his last works. The Salzburg Festival has reappointed Markus Hinterhäuser as its artistic director for the third time. The Austrian pianist will remain in the role for a further five years, making Hinterhäuser the longest to serve in the role since Herbert von Karajan. The 66-year-old Hinterhäuser first worked with the Salzburg Festival as its director of concerts from 2007-2011 before serving as interim artistic director in 2011. Bulgaria and Romania joined Europe's Schengen area of free movement on Sunday, joining the rest of Europe travelling freely by air and sea without border checks. The admission to the zone comes after a thirteen-year wait. The membership is partial, however, as a veto by Austria means the new membership will not apply to land routes, which Vienna argued would lead to more asylum seekers travelling into Europe.
