For 27 years, the heat in Regina Fred's Queens apartment building came from a noisy steam radiator that she couldn't control. Sometimes it didn't come on at all, leaving her shivering. Sometimes, the radiators ran so hot that residents had to keep their windows open in the middle of winter for relief. That all changed a few months ago when she got a window-mounted heat pump as part of a pilot project by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) aimed at cutting energy costs and lowering emissions. Suddenly, all Fred has to do is touch a dial to bump her temperature up or down, and she finds ...

Los Angeles (AFP) - The house where Jeff Bezos founded online shopping mammoth Amazon is up for sale, offering one lucky buyer the chance to own a piece of internet history. Bezos and his then-wife MacKenzie Scott were renting the single-story, three-bedroom home near Seattle in the mid 1990s when they began selling books online from the garage. Amazon lore holds that the garage was outfitted only with a computer, basic office supplies and a desk constructed from a door bought from a home improvement center. Originally the company shipped only books -- Amazon says the first one was titled "Flu...

Babcock Ranch (United States) (AFP) - When Hurricane Ian churned past her home in southwest Florida last year, Mary Frisbee shrugged off worries. She watched TV and surfed the internet. That's because she and her husband live in Babcock Ranch, a town near the US Gulf Coast that was created with two imperatives: homes have to be built sustainably, and must be able to withstand hurricanes, a constant menace. The community takes nature deeply into account. To avoid flooding caused by storms, Babcock Ranch is built some nine meters (30 feet) above sea level. Town planners also preserved wetlands i...

Surfside (United States) (AFP) - The Florida town of Surfside held a memorial ceremony Friday for 98 people who died exactly a year ago when a seaside condominium collapsed, with relatives of the deceased, rescue workers and politicians on hand. The tribute was held at the spot where part of the 12-story Champlain Towers South building once stood in this town north of Miami Beach. People taking part in the ceremony cried, hugged and clapped as relatives of victims took turns giving speeches. "I know what it means to feel profound loss. And one year later, time has not healed my broken heart. L...

Part of Champlain Towers South, a 12-story building built in 1981 in Surfside, a town north of Miami Beach, came tumbling down on June 24, 2021 as dozens of residents slept inside. Washington (AFP) - Blocks from the White House, an unassuming edifice in downtown Washington that once held offices used by the US Department of Justice is set to be converted into homes for hundreds of people. The transformation of the vacant office space is among a surge of "adaptive reuse" projects that swept the US property market in 2021, where developers bought hotels and offices that were struggling to get business and announced plans to turn them into apartments. "The market spoke, and it said the value was greater for a conversion than for it continuing as office space," said Michael ...

Washington (AFP) - Rescuers are still searching for survivors in rubble of the collapsed Florida apartment tower, but pressure is building -- from families of missing residents to the state's governor -- for answers on how such a disaster could have occurred. A wing of the oceanfront complex suddenly pancaked on itself around 1:30 am (05:30 GMT) Thursday, with 55 apartments collapsing in a cloud of dust, leaving 159 people still missing on Friday. Completed in 1981, Champlain Towers South was due to be recertified this year in line with Miami-Dade county safety regulations -- which require a r...
