New York (AFP) - Climate change is a major issue on the US political agenda, yet the country's Green Party and its candidate Jill Stein are next to invisible in the presidential race. Making her third tilt at the White House, Stein is relying on her positions on issues outside of the environment to stay in the mix. According to a recent poll, she is pulling around three percent support, after finishing with 0.4 percent and one percent of votes in 2012 and 2016, respectively. "Our first priority is to get on the ballot," a step requiring thousands of signatures, explains the 73-year-old doctor...

Do you ever get that feeling that there aren’t enough hours in the day? That time is somehow racing away from you, and it is impossible to fit everything in. But then, you step outside into the countryside and suddenly everything seems slower, more relaxed, like time has somehow changed. It’s not just you – recent research showed nature can regulate our sense of time. For many of us, the combined demands of work, home and family mean that we are always feeling like we don’t have enough time. Time poverty has also been exacerbated by digital technologies. Washington (AFP) - The United States on Thursday announced sweeping new rules requiring coal-fired plants to eliminate nearly all their carbon emissions or commit to shutting down altogether, a keystone of President Joe Biden's agenda to confront the climate crisis. Hailed by environmental groups as a "gamechanger," the regulations take effect from 2032 and will also mandate that new, high capacity gas-fired plants slash their carbon dioxide output by the same amount -- 90 percent -- a target that would require the use of carbon capture technology. It comes as Democratic incumbent Biden faces ...

A court in Berlin handed down suspended sentences for three climate activists responsible for a paint attack on the German capital's famous Brandenburg Gate in September last year. The district court found the members of the Last Generation climate group guilty of causing damage to property and gave each of them an eight-month suspended sentence. The 22, 28 and 64-year-old defendants had previously confessed to having spray orange paint on the landmark on September 17, 2023. They had argued that the action was an "appropriate and necessary protest" in view of the climate crisis. The court disa...
