Greece’s fire season officially starts in May, but dozens of fires have already been put out over the past month after temperatures began hitting 30 degrees Celsius in late March - considerably higher than previous spikes recorded over the past decade. “It’s actually already summer for us,” said Fire Lieutenant Colonel Ioannis Kolovos during a recent training exercise. “The truth is that the fire season has started prematurely and has been extended over the last five years.” His 10-member elite fire crew from the 1st Wildfire Special Operation Unit bristles with tools needed to hold back fires...

Workers and activists around the world marked May Day with largely peaceful protests on Wednesday over rising prices and calls for greater labour rights. Pro-Palestinian sentiments were also on display. Police in Istanbul used tear gas and fired rubber bullets to disperse thousands of people who tried to break through a barricade and reach the main Taksim square in defiance of a ban. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said at least 210 people were detained. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government has long declared Taksim off-limits for demonstrations on security grounds. In 1977, unidentified...

Researchers at the University of Pisa have discovered a narrative purporting to tell the final hours of Plato, one of Ancient Greece’s greatest philosophers. The narrative was found in a papyrus scroll that had been almost completely destroyed in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. In the text, it tells the story of the philosopher, a disciple of Socrates, who died in 348 BC. The Greek philosopher died in bed as he listened to a Thracian slave girl play him the flute, it suggests. AI helps decode scrolls destroyed during the Vesuvius eruption60 years on: What do we know about the Derveni P...

A far-right Greek MP has been arrested after a punch-up in the country's parliament. Konstantinos Floros, a former member of the extreme Spartans Party, allegedly assaulted Vasilis Grammenos, from the nationalist Greek Solution Party. Parliament Speaker Constantinos Tasoulas ordered that Floros be handed over to the police and face criminal charges of assaulting a member of Parliament. Floros, who is now an independent MP, was then arrested by the police. Inside MPs had been debating whether to lift the immunity of the MP Kyriakos Velopoulos, who is the president of the Greek Solution Party. H...

Strong southerly winds carried the dust from the Sahara Desert, giving the atmosphere of the Greek capital a Martian-like filter in the last hours of daylight. The skies are predicted to clear on Wednesday as winds shift and move the dust, with temperatures dipping. On Tuesday, the daily high in parts of the southern island of Crete topped 30 degrees Celsius, more than 20 degrees higher than what was registered in much of northern Greece. People took to social media to express surprise at the orange skies that covered the city. The strong southerly winds over the past few days have also fanned...

For most people, deciphering the impact of rising temperatures on their everyday lives isn’t easy. Global warming of 1.5C or 2C on average is hard to imagine. To try and solve this problem, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have come up with an innovative new way to measure this real-life change and predict its long-term effects. Using data from 50 different climate models, they charted how the number of ‘outdoor days’ in various destinations around the world will go up or down by 2100. These ‘outdoor days’ refer to periods of 24 hours when temperatures are pleasan...

Speaking ahead of a gathering of leaders in Brussels on Wednesday evening, both German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the Netherlands' caretaker Prime Minister Mark Rutte called for urgent steps to provide Kyiv with the air defence systems it needs to fend off the barrage of missiles launched from Russia. Both leaders suggested the bloc's countries need to look closely at their stockpiles and consider sending their own air defence systems to Kyiv. "In view of all the terrible attacks that are being made from the air, you can see that it is necessary to do something," Scholz explained. "Everyone ha...

Strikes called by Greece’s largest labour union on Wednesday halted ferries, disrupted public transport services and left some state-run hospitals running on emergency staffing levels in Athens and elsewhere. The General Confederation of Greek Labor, GSEE, led the strikes to demand the restoration of collective bargaining rights that were axed more than a decade ago during a severe financial crisis. Unemployment hit a record high of more than 27% in 2013, and has been dropping in the years since. However, it crept up to 11% in February, its highest level since August 2023. In Athens, protester...

When same-sex marriage was legalised in Greece back in February, LGBTQ+ campaigners celebrated. Now, though, the British Foreign Office has issued new travel advice for queer people travelling to the country. An update, published on the UK government’s foreign travel advice page, has warned that same-sex couples could experience discrimination in certain parts of Greece. While it states that “attitudes are generally much more welcoming in Athens and on many Greek islands, particularly on Lesvos, Mykonos and Skiathos,” there are concerns that queer visitors could face prejudice elsewhere. The g...

Even without the help of Apollo, the flame that is to burn at the Paris Olympics was kindled on Tuesday at the site of the ancient games in southern Greece. Cloudy skies prevented the traditional lighting, when an actress dressed as an ancient Greek priestess uses the sun to ignite a silver torch after offering up a symbolic prayer to Apollo, the ancient Greek sun god. Instead, a backup flame was used that had been lit on the same spot Monday, during the final rehearsal. Normally, the foremost of a group of priestesses in long, pleated dresses dips the fuel-filled torch into a parabolic mirror...
