Iceland’s Play Airlines is fairly new on the aviation scene, but it’s already making an impression on the industry. Founded in 2021, it has become well known for allowing its crew to express themselves with tattoos, piercings, and whatever hair colour they feel like having. Each staff member can wear gender neutral uniforms and trainers, as opposed to tight outfits and high heels. Einar Örn Ólafsson was only installed as the CEO of Play in April, but that approach is something he’s sticking to. “We like to think of ourselves as a fun, progressive and playful airline and we encourage our crew t...

A stunning timelapse video shows a volcano in southwestern Iceland erupting with the Northern lights accompanying it. The volcano has been sending lava towards the nearby fishing town of Grindavik, about 50 kilometres southwest of Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital. Iceland, which sits above a volcanic hot spot in the North Atlantic, sees regular eruptions and is highly experienced at dealing with them.

A volcano in Iceland that has erupted multiple times since December continued to spew out lava on Tuesday. The crater concerned is located a few kilometres northeast of the town of Grindavik. The active lava flow was confined close to the volcanic cone, officials said, at a safe distance from any infrastructure. Iceland's civil defence has lowered the level of alert for the area from emergency level to danger level. Grindavik, a coastal town of 3,800 people about 50 kilometres southwest of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, was evacuated in November when the Svartsengi volcanic system awakened afte...

Search for the world’s best beaches and you’ll find countless listicles waxing lyrical about golden sands and crystalline waters. But Beachatlas, an AI-powered encyclopaedia of global beaches, has a new ranking that goes a little deeper. “Typically, the quest for the world's best beaches zeroes in on their visual allure,” the company writes. “This is the first selection ever to expand and encompass diverse criteria such as the value to the local community, DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion], lifestyle offerings, and cultural significance.” So how did the selection process work and which two...

This year’s World Happiness Report has been released and in news that might not come as much of a surprise, Finland has topped the list of happiest countries for a seventh successive year. In fact, Nordic countries make up the majority of the top 10, with Denmark, Iceland and Sweden at numbers two, three and four respectively and Norway in seventh place. The report is put together by Gallup World Poll in conjunction with Oxford University’s Wellbeing Research Centre and the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network. The team behind it uses data from more than 140 countries for t...

Only seven countries in the world met safe air pollution levels in 2023, a new report by Swiss air quality technology company IQAir reveals. The World Air Quality Report, released this week, draws on data from more than 30,000 monitoring stations in 134 countries, territories and regions. Of these, 124 were found to breach safe levels of PM2.5 (fine particulate matter), according to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. These microscopic particles, measuring less than 2.5 microns in diameter, can be inhaled deep into our lungs and even reach our bloodstreams. They have been linked to hea...

Lava from a volcanic eruption in Iceland flowed toward defences around the town of Grindavik on Sunday. So far the fortification has held the molten rock back as the local community was evacuated. Scientists said the eruption appeared to be weakening and would probably peter out within hours. A volcanic system on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the country’s southwest erupted late Saturday for the fourth time in three months, sending orange jets of lava into the night sky. Iceland’s Meteorological Office said the eruption opened a fissure in the earth about 3 kilometres long between the mountains o...

Choosing to homeschool my son was not an easy decision. He’s only seven, but will I really be able to give him the education he needs? Will he miss out on essential life skills if he doesn’t learn how to navigate crowds of kids in the playground, or overcome stage fright during his first school play? These are all very real questions that weighed on my mind for months as I struggled with the decision. But my son’s neurodiversity meant that most playtimes were being spent standing alone by the fence. He felt bullied and misunderstood. And his laser-sharp ability to focus on the often somewhat o...

A volcanic eruption in southwestern Iceland appears to have subsided, though scientists are warning that the area may experience further eruptions in the coming months. Iceland’s Meteorological Office said late Thursday that the eruption had decreased significantly. The eruption began at about 6 a.m. local time on Thursday in the area northeast of Mount Sýlingarfell, the Met Office said. It prompted the evacuation of the popular Blue Lagoon thermal spa and cut off heat and hot water to several communities on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern corner of the island. “Although the eruption h...
