Shares in Intel fell by around 9% at times in after-hours trading on Thursday after the US chip-maker forecast revenues of between $12.5 billion and $13.5 billion for the current quarter. Analysts had expected an average of around $13.6 billion. The forecast for adjusted earnings per share also fell well short of expectations. The forecast shows that Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger still has a lot of work ahead of him in reorganizing the once dominant chip company. The competition is not only strong in data centre technology. Intel has recently launched its Gaudi 3 AI chip, in what seems to be the company's answer to Nvidia's H100 graphic processing unit (GPU), as more tech companies aim to manufacture chips which can use big AI technology. The Gaudi 3 chip is essentially an accelerator chip, and is mainly designed to assist AI systems training, especially by sorting through mounds of data. Another key function of the chip is expected to be helping to...

US chip-maker Intel unveiled its latest artificial intelligence (AI) chip on Tuesday in a move to take market share from Nvidia. Intel said the Gaudi 3 could generate AI responses, a process called inference, faster than Nvidia's H100. It was also more power efficient and cheaper, Intel said. The H100 is one of Nvidia's most popular chips, powering AI for the likes of Microsoft and Google. Nvidia's computer systems dominate AI training in data centres and the company holds a market share position of about 80%. Intel said that the new chips would be available to customers including Dell, Hewlet...
