Le 19 mai 2024 le président iranien Ebrahim Raïsi a trouvé accidentellement la mort suite à un crash d'hélicoptère dans le nord-ouest de l'Iran. L'engin transportait 8 autres personnes à son bord notamment le ministre des Affaires étrangères, Hossein Amir Abdollahian. Ce décès a donc imposé de nouvelles élections présidentielles qui se tiendront le 28 juin et possiblement le 7 juillet si un second tour est nécessaire.
