TV images showed firefighters shifting rubble by hand from the flattened three-story building in Kucukcekmece on the city’s European side. Two injured people were pulled from the debris, broadcaster CNN Turk reported. The Istanbul governor’s office said the structure collapsed at 8:40am local time. The cause was not immediately clear. More than 59,000 people were killed last year when a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck parts of southern Turkey and neighbouring Syria. The disaster highlighted the poor enforcement of building regulations in Turkey.

Humanitarian organisations in Papua New Guinea have warned of a possible second landslide and a disease outbreak at the scene of the country's largest mass-casualty disaster in recent memory, which saw hundreds injured and killed by a massive landslide. A UN official said the water streams and scores of bodies buried by the tons of debris that swept over a village on May 24 are together posing a major risk of further catastrophe even as rescuers struggle to help those still trapped. A mass of boulders, earth and splintered trees devastated Yambali in the South Pacific nation's remote highlands...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Sometimes all you have to do is ask for "HELP": That's what three men stranded on a deserted Pacific island learned earlier this week, writing the message in palm fronds which were spotted by US rescuers. The trio, all experienced mariners in their 40s, became stranded on a lonely island after setting off from Micronesia's Polowat Atoll on March 31 in their motor-powered skiff which subsequently experienced damage. They were reported missing last Saturday by a woman who told the US Coast Guard her three uncles never returned from Pikelot Atoll, a tiny island in the remote W...

Employees of the Richmond Wildlife Center in Virginia are doing their best to act like mother foxes as they feed and care for an orphaned kit that found her way into their care. In a bid to make this as natural as possible, they had to get a little bit creative. Executive director Melissa Stanley took the unorthodox step of donning a hyper realistic fox mask while feeding the tiny kit from a syringe. The kit sits on top of a large stuffed animal fox that is supposed to look like her mother, Stanley said. How can abandoned animals be returned to the wild? This helps to minimise human sounds and ...
