The 60th edition of the Venice Biennale is a bright, bold and boundary-breaking spectacle. The international exhibition is renowned for distilling many of the major geopolitical issues of the moment, and this year is no exception. Curator Adriano Pedrosa’s title "Foreigners Everywhere" is conveniently malleable, bringing under its wing topics like nationalism, displacement, marginalisation and colonialism. Some pavilions and exhibitions explicitly confront these contemporary issues. The Dutch Pavilion did more than just reflect on the colonial art theft debate; it enacted change by persuading ...

Romania has announced a ban on gambling venues in small towns and villages with populations of less than 15,000 residents. What's known as the “law of slot machines” was passed by deputies in the lower house of parliament."It is the first law adopted in Parliament in 30 years against this mafia that has controlled the political world until now," said Alfred Simonis, the leader of the Social Democrats. "Right now we are fighting an industry that has a total turnover of €10-12 billion." Industry figures complain they were not consulted, and hope that the authorities will control the black market...

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz warned of threats posed by right-wing populists Saturday as he addressed a gathering of centre-left European parties ahead of elections for the European Parliament in June. Scholz arrived in Romania's capital Bucharest for a conference of the Party of European Socialists, part of the Socialists and Democrats group, the second biggest in the Parliament. Voters in the 27 EU member states go to the polls 6-9. “Right-wing populists are running election campaigns against our united Europe,” the German leader said at the Palace of the Parliament, which hosted the confer...

After years of negotiations to join the Schengen area, Romania and Bulgaria now have free access for travellers arriving by air or sea from both countries. However, land border checks will remain in place due to opposition primarily from Austria which has long blocked their bid over illegal migration concerns. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the change as a “huge success for both countries” and a “historic moment” for what is the world’s largest free travel zone. The Schengen Area was established in 1985. Before Bulgaria and Romania’s admission, it was comprised of 23 of th...

April is set to be an exciting month for Romania and Bulgaria. On 31 March, the Balkan nations started the process of joining the Schengen Area as controls were lifted at air and sea borders. Discussions about lifting controls at land borders - which would see the two countries properly join the Schengen Area - are still ongoing. While both nations have been members of the European Union since 2007, they are still obliged to show passports upon entry to other EU countries, unlike many other European citizens. In 2024, border controls for the two countries will be simplified and it’s likely man...

Bulgaria and Romania joined Europe's Schengen area of free movement on Sunday, joining the rest of Europe travelling freely by air and sea without border checks. The admission to the zone comes after a thirteen-year wait. The membership is partial, however, as a veto by Austria means the new membership will not apply to land routes, which Vienna argued would lead to more asylum seekers travelling into Europe. The Schengen zone will now comprise of 29 members – 25 of the 27 European Union member states as well as Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Romania's government said Schengen...
