On an Indian Summer afternoon in late October, the Nebraska Cornhuskers celebrated the 100th anniversary of Memorial Stadium with a 17-9 edging of the Northwestern Wildcats. In a game that didn’t seem that close but was always in doubt, the Blackshirt defense was again the difference as they recorded 8 sacks and 13 tackles for loss and repeatedly stymied the Wildcat offense holding the visitors to just three field goals. The Huskers have held back-to-back conference opponents to single-digit points for the first time since November of 2010 and are above .500 (at 4-3) during the second half of ...

Players and coaches alike hope a rugged Sunday night practice in lieu of the usual walk-through helped with the Huskers' mindset after Saturday's poor showing against Michigan. "I've never seen that before where Coach just sprung that on them on a Sunday," Nebraska football defensive coordinator Tony White said Tuesday. "And they had probably one of their better practices ever in pads." "We needed that," said center Ben Scott. "We just needed the physicality. We needed to play for each other and just go out there and do our thing." White said the defense's performance in the 45-7 loss Saturday...

View the 11 images of this gallery on the original article One of the concerns about the 3-3-5 defense, at least from fans, is its ability to stop the run. With its reputation as a run-first league with massive O-linemen, it's hard to believe, but 13 out of 14 Big Ten schools used 11 personnel more than any other last season. In layman's terms, that's one running back, one tight end and three receivers. Versatility in the backend will be important. Luckily, the strength of Nebraska's defense in 2023 will be the secondary. Including the nickel position, Nebraska returns all five of its starters...

Did Travis Fisher fill the holes? The defensive secondary is the next-to-last stop in my overview of the '22 Nebraska football team. Last week, the subject was the Husker linebacker room. I opined that Husker assistant coaches Mike Dawson (OLBs) and Barrett Ruud (ILBs) must be happy with their bunch of linebackers going into the fall. There's a good chance Husker secondary coach Travis Fisher is also excited for this year's crop of defensive backs. He knows he has a talented group, but he may be concerned with the experience factor. After all, the Huskers did lose some talent and experience fr...

Offense vs. defense a possibility in spring finale Saturday The format of Saturday's Nebraska football spring game is still being determined. Coach Scott Frost said after Monday's practice that he'd prefer the traditional full two-team format of Reds vs. Whites, but that might not be doable because of injuries. A possible alternative would be an offense-vs.-defense setup similar to what was used in the 2014 spring game. Regardless of the game's format, "a lot of the stuff we're doing now isn't on tape, so we certainly don't want to show many of our cards. But ... guys are going to want to comp...
