This read-option play by Purdue didn't have a chance. Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White's 3-3-5 scheme can create personnel mismatches on the fly, and that's what happened Saturday when Isaac Gifford crept up from the secondary to the line of scrimmage and nailed the ball carrier for a loss. Dr. Rob Zatechka draws it up in this installment of Doc's Diagnosis.

Fixing the fumbles has been a top priority since Nebraska running backs flirted with disaster by coughing up the ball twice in the fourth quarter against Illinois on Oct. 6. Nebraska offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield said Tuesday that Anthony Grant had a "really good week" in that regard. "He's one of the most talented running backs in our league," Satterfield said, "but if you can't hold onto the football, now you start messing with wins and losses." Grant and backup Emmett Johnson each turned the ball over in the late going against the Fighting Illini. Johnson too has since done a goo...

Six Huskers met with the media after Tuesday’s Nebraska football practice, and a common thread was having patience with the new coaching staff after the team’s 0-2 start. “I believe it 100 percent in my heart, if we trust in this process, it’s going to happen,” said freshman defensive lineman Cameron Lenhardt. Running back Gabe Ervin Jr. said solving the offense's struggles boils down to executing. “We just have to play free,” he said, “and execute the job.” Linebacker Mikai Gbayor, who got his first start Saturday against Colorado after not playing during his first two years with Nebraska, si...

The Nebraska football season is almost here. Proof came Friday with the first "game week" press conference and the release of the first depth chart of 2023. Coach Matt Rhule and half a dozen players previewed the Aug. 31 opener at Minnesota, a Thursday night affair that's just six days away. The press conference came the morning after the Huskers held a simulated game under the lights in Memorial Stadium. Rhule said he hoped the scrimmage would essentially serve as Game 1 when it comes to the old coaching adage that a team's greatest improvement comes between the first and second games. Placek...

View the 11 images of this gallery on the original article One of the concerns about the 3-3-5 defense, at least from fans, is its ability to stop the run. With its reputation as a run-first league with massive O-linemen, it's hard to believe, but 13 out of 14 Big Ten schools used 11 personnel more than any other last season. In layman's terms, that's one running back, one tight end and three receivers. Versatility in the backend will be important. Luckily, the strength of Nebraska's defense in 2023 will be the secondary. Including the nickel position, Nebraska returns all five of its starters...

Matt Rhule outlines plans for Saturday’s spring finale in Memorial Stadium A traditional football game, or something close to it. Quarterbacks who are fair game for contact. Four 15-minute quarters. No vanilla play-calling. That's what's in store Saturday at Memorial Stadium for Nebraska's Red-White spring game, head coach Matt Rhule said before the team's Thursday evening practice. "We gotta get good at playing football," Rhule said, "so we’re going to go play." It will be a "work day" for the team and staff. "We're trying to learn how to win, and there's an ebb and flow to a football game th...
